 Background

Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) has academic and moral responsibilities to conserve Borneo’s “lungs of the world” as a university located in the South Borneo region. This responsibility also goes to the Faculty of Engineering ULM and the Graduate School of Civil Engineering. This becomes the primary commitment of ULM and all of its academic community (Faculty and department) to provide services for caring, protecting, and developing “green development” to maintain Borneo as the “lungs of the world”.

Especially for the Graduate School of Civil Engineering, a national seminar regarding this matter has been held every year. The Graduate school of Civil Engineering has already organized the Annual National Seminar since 2014 on several themes and sub-themes regarding sustainable development. Furthermore, since 2021, to improve the seminars’ quality and reach a broader range of speakers and participants, the Graduate School of Civil Engineering organized the First International Symposium on Civil Engineering and Environmental Research (ISCEER). This agenda is also planned to be held annually. Thus, this year the Graduate School of Civil Engineering will organize the Second ISCEER.

In addition, in line with the First ISCEER, this year ISCEER also focuses on increasing the attention of “sustainable development” in Indonesia, especially on Borneo Island, in terms of technology, green material, and construction method, etc. As the island of the “lungs of the world,” it is crucial that development in Borneo must be in harmony with nature. For this reason, to live with nature and its entire ecosystem on the right path, it is essential to have a constructive dialogue to support sustainable development with research and technology updates.

Following the success of the First ISCEER, we also would like to invite researchers, practitioners, and bureaucrats to participate in discussions regarding issues in sustainable development especially related to “Research and Technology Updates in Civil and Environmental Engineering to Support Sustainable Development“. This point will also become the theme of the Second ISCEER. It is hoped that we can achieve a better understanding to establish a green construction and green environment through this symposium.

Sub Theme Activities

In the symposium, we would like to discuss the latest findings regarding research and technology in Civil and Environmental Engineering to achieve environmentally friendly development, including but not limited to research and investigation findings in:

Objectives and Benefits

This symposium aims to produce documents on points of view and ideas generated bycross-disciplinary speakers who have high concern on the Civil Engineering and Environmental Research, in terms of sustainable development in general and specifically in green construction. This activity is expected to encourage the passion for researching the green technology for sustainable development. As a result, this is moving towards sustainable development publications published in national and international journals. It becomes suggestions for policy-makers in the context of sustainable development, which are always close to people’s lives and their environments.
